The Issue

Issue 001 ‘Japa’ being a maiden issue of NgigaReview bears a similar origin to its progenitor. Both were born out of reaction—a reaction so to say with the aim of bringing to the fore something otherwise shoved down. NgigaReview is a typical Nigerian. A beautiful being born of a place after its own life. And as such before the first cry, it knows that this might just be it’s last. Hence it is perhaps not incidental that it’s very first Issue is ‘Japa’ which summarily means “… to leave a place after one’s life”

Issue 001 ‘Japa’ is a collection of “last straws and camel backs”. Japa as an issue is a reaction to migration as a subject, a sociocultural development. With this issue, Ngiga Review aims to articulate, through a collection of literary works that engage the subject, the nuances of leaving as a means to live. A magazine based in Nigeria, we understand the language of the people, and refuse to ignore the realities they confront.

This issue is our attempt to offer you stories, of our departures, as well as our longings to exit our land.
